HUD's New Unsheltered and Rural Homelessness Grants
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a new Initiative for Unsheltered and Rural Homelessness to help communities implement coordinated approaches for assisting people experiencing unsheltered homelessness, including funds set aside specifically for vulnerable people in rural communities.HUD's goal is to reduce the prevalence of unsheltered homelessness by connecting people and families experiencing (or at risk of) homelessness to housing, health care and supportive services. This initiative will fund competitive grants totaling $322 million to existing Continuums of Care (CoCs), which bring together community partners from multiple sectors, including public housing and housing services agencies, health care organizations and community-based organizations that provide supportive services to address homelessness. The initiative also includes additional funding for housing vouchers.
AAAs can partner with CoCs to help secure the new grant resources for their communities. Informing the grant proposal is one way to elevate attention to older adults' needs and seek partnership opportunities. The ACL summary has additional helpful information. Applications are due October 20, 2022.
