Based on point-in-time counts conducted in January 2017, it is estimated that nearly a quarter of individuals experiencing homelessness were people with disabilities. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reports that over a million more households led by a person with a disability under age 62 are classified as having worst case housing needs--meaning they are either paying more than half of their income in rent or live in severely inadequate housing, or both--placing them at risk of homelessness. The number of Americans 65 or older experiencing homelessness is anticipated to grow from 40,000 today to 106,000 by 2030. Beyond securing housing that is affordable and adequate, many older adults and people with disabilities also need access to services and supports—including assistive technology—that meet their individual needs and preferences.

This webinar will highlight the benefits of partnerships between Centers for Independent Living (CILs), statewide Assistive Technology (AT) Act programs, and Continuums of Care programs in the development and implementation of ongoing strategies to address homelessness.

Webinar participants will:

  • Learn about resources and programs available to connect people to services and assistive technology, and how these programs can promote housing stability.
  • Discover how access to AT can help people remain in their homes and communities.
  • Identify ways in which partnerships between CoCs and the disability network can be developed, enhanced, and maintained.
Registrants will receive a confirmation email with information about joining the webinar. The webinar will include real-time captioning and ASL interpretation. Everyone who registers by 9:00 AM ET on June 29 will receive a Zoom reminder email that contains links to the slides, accessibility tips, and other handouts. If you need any additional accommodations, or if you have questions, please email HSRC@acl.hhs.gov.
