Doors to Housing for Older Adults Key Concepts and Resource List

One out of five people in the United States experiencing homelessness are older adults, and that proportion is rising in most communities. Community-level innovations tailored to older adults are necessary to prevent and reduce homelessness.

This resource guide provides a starting place for the local leaders addressing the particular needs of older adults at risk of or experiencing homelessness: Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) and homeless Continuums of Care (CoCs). Use this guide to learn about each other, ways to partner and options to address together the larger issue of homelessness among older adults. In the coming months, USAging will expand these offerings to include additional resources and online training.

To get started, the “Key Concepts” page covers the fundamentals of older adult homelessness, like definitions of common terms and an explanation of the various response structures already in place.

Some AAAs and CoCs have already been working together, and more details about their impressive achievements can be found on the “Partnership Case Examples and Tools” page.
