President's Budget Undermines Aging Programs

Earlier this week, the president released a budget request to Congress that would make significant cuts to discretionary and mandatory programs supporting older adults. While most OAA programs were spared cuts, a few were hit hard and a budget that rolls back vital block grant programs and Medicaid and other safety net programs would have serious consequences for older adults and caregivers.

More information about what the budget request means for older adults was released in this week's Legislative Update. The budget is not a binding document, but it does kick off the FY 2021 appropriations season when your advocacy will be needed to help encourage policymakers to increase funding for aging programs.

Meanwhile, while we had hoped that the Senate might pass the compromise OAA reauthorization bill this week, Congress adjourned for a week-long recess without taking action. This means that local advocates will have an important opportunity next week to weigh in with their Senators and Representatives at home and urge them to swiftly pass OAA when they return to DC later this month.
