New Federal Efforts to Prevent Elder Abuse in Nursing Homes

The Department of Justice (DOJ) launched 10 regional Elder Justice Task Forces, which are coalitions of agencies including federal, state and local prosecutors, law enforcement and long-term care facilities.
The Task Forces will coordinate and enhance efforts to hold nursing homes accountable for providing inadequate care for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. This will ensure that the millions of vulnerable older adults living in nursing homes not only receive enhanced quality of care, but are also treated with respect and dignity. General Benjamin C. Mizer, head of the Justice Department's Civil Division stated “By bringing everyone to the table, we will be able to more effectively and quickly pursue nursing homes that are jeopardizing the health and well-being of their residents,” which ultimately reflects the DOJ's larger commitment to protect the nation's older adults.
