Lawmakers and White House Make Final Funding Pushes Prior to Election

While few in DC were worried about a government shutdown on Wednesday, lawmakers passed—and the President signed into law—a temporary funding measure in the waning minutes of FY 2020.

The measure will keep federal funding flowing through December 11 and prospects for a longer-term FY 2021 funding bill at that point will depend largely on what happens at the polls in November.

Additionally, this week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin jump started discussions to attempt to achieve a compromise on another round of coronavirus relief. Despite ongoing discussions with the administration, House lawmakers passed a legislative package with a lower price tag than their May HEROES bill in attempt to bridge the current funding gap, but the chance of a pre-election agreement are slim. Details about the measure—including $1.175 billion for OAA and elder justice programs—are outlined in n4a's recent Legislative Update.
