Senate Passes Long-Awaited Caregiver Bill, but Action on OAA Still Pending

This week, Senators unanimously approved a five-year reauthorization of the Lifespan Respite Program, S. 995, endorsing $10 million in annual funding for respite services for caregivers of adults and children with special needs. Funding for these services expired in 2011, and advocates have been working since to achieve a reauthorization. Senate approval of S. 995 follows House action last year and is an important step in the process toward final passage.

We remain hopeful that the Senate will soon act to also pass a five-year reauthorization of the OAA, the Supporting Older Americans Act of 2020, H.R. 4334. Advocates should continue to engage with their lawmakers to encourage swift action on these vital programs supporting older adults and caregivers.
