Spotlight on Innovations and Achievements: Florida Association of Area Agencies on Aging

Elder abuse is a growing area of concern that AAAs must address. The Florida Association of Area Agencies on Aging did just that by creating a program to increase awareness and prevent elder abuse. In addition to developing a curriculum, the team created a train-the-trainer program, which helped ensure that the program is delivered consistently throughout the state of Florida. This training is also available online through a learning management system.
 
The need for this program was identified when the state announced that it would be updating all trainings conducted by the state's AAAs. The team at the Florida Association of Area Agencies on Aging decided to collaborate with the state to revamp the training, which ultimately lead to this project. In fact, all of Florida's AAAs came together to collaborate on the project. In replication this program, the Florida Association of Area Agencies on Aging encourages that similar trainings be regularly updated as new developments occur.  
 
Since its launch, few changes have been made to the program, but the team did make certain to keep the program current and relevant. The innovative program has seen great success as staff trainers reported that they feel more comfortable with the quality of the training and the consistency of the training across the state. While it is unfortunate that elder abuse is an issue, the Florida Association of Area Agencies on Aging is doing its best to address and prevent elder abuse while increasing awareness by making its training scalable so other AAAs can easily adopt the program.
