Leaders in the Senate and House are eager to begin discussions to reauthorize the Older Americans Act, which expires in September. n4a's Recommendations for the Reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, released this week, reflect extensive member input and eight months of Board and staff work. They provide the basis for our reauthorization agenda that reflects deeply held principles—such as the value of local flexibility.
They also include a bold ask for authorization levels that we hope captures what n4a members repeatedly tell us: that, most of all, the Act needs more resources. Our recommendations also provide a mix of large and small ways to improve the Act. We hope they represent what the Aging Network has always done well while acknowledging where we are headed. This set of recommendations is just the beginning, however. As the reauthorization process unfolds, n4a will respond to recommendations from our members, leaders on Capitol Hill and our colleagues in other organizations.
In the coming weeks, we will also provide a suite of advocacy tools and resources for you to engage your elected officials and grassroots stakeholders on these critical issues. We have also already started working with Capitol Hill, and are optimistic about the prospect for a positive, bipartisan, bicameral process to move reauthorization forward.
In addition to our recently announced n4a Policy Brief, What the 116th Congress Needs to Know about an Aging America, and our soon-to-be released 2019 n4a Policy Priorities, we hope you will have all the resources you need to effectively advocate for older adults and caregivers in your communities!
