Avoiding Home Improvement Scams After Disasters

As the country works through Hurricane Harvey's devastation and the southeast United States braces for Hurricane Irma, the recovery process promises to be a long, arduous journey for affected communities. While thousands of Americans will grapple with property damage and repairs, older adults can guard themselves against financial exploitation and home improvement scams with n4a's consumer brochure, "Home Improvement Scams: Tools to Reduce Your Risk."

This publication, produced by n4a and the Eldercare Locator, focuses on the growing problem of scam artists causing older adults to lose thousands of dollars and even their homes under the guise of "helping" them to make home repairs. The full-color, glossy brochure features tips and resources to help ensure that older adults can undertake successful home improvement projects so they can continue to live with safety and independence in their homes and communities.

The n4a-administered Eldercare Locator continues to serve as a vital conduit between older adults struggling to deal with the aftermath Hurricane Harvey and the services and supports AAAs can offer in their communities. To connect with one of the Eldercare Locator's dedicated Information Specialists, visit www.eldercare.gov or call 1-800-677-1116.

If you or your agency would like to help AAAs in Texas and Louisiana that have been affected by Hurricane Harvey, please consider donating to the n4a Disaster Relief Fund. Since its creation more than 10 years ago, the n4a Disaster Relief Fund has made numerous donations to AAAs dealing with natural disasters and emergencies. All donations will go straight to the AAAs for distribution to meet local needs.
