Dementia Friendly America Is On the Move

Hamilton County, IN kicked off their Dementia Friendly America (DFA) effort last week, drawing more than 30 representatives from a wide range of community sectors including health care, local government, public safety, non profit organizations and consumer groups.
n4a staff, Nora Super and Meredith Hanley, provided an overview of DFA and their DFA colleague, Olivia Mastry, engaged attendees in an interactive discussion about actions that Hamilton County could take to engage in this work.
n4a member Central Indiana Council on Aging (CICOA)—which is the AAA in Central Indiana—played a key role in organizing the event, which also drew support from Eli Lilly. By meeting's end, it was clear that there was ample interest in and new tools for ways to collaborate toward a more dementia-friendly Hamilton County! There are over 45 communities across the country engaged with DFA and the vast majority have AAAs involved or leading the effort.
n4a is playing a key role in this next stage of DFA's development by serving as the administrative entity and providing technical assistance and support to communities that are interested in joining DFA as well as to those communities that are part of the DFA network. There is a wealth of support available through the DFA website but Nora and Meredith also provide technical assistance through stakeholder phone calls, learning collaboratives, and kick-off workshops.
