Updated CMS Guidance Will Help Residents Stay Connected to Their Loved Ones

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued updated nursing home visitation guidance that will make it easier for residents to stay connected to family and friends during COVID-19—and impact the work for the 66 percent of AAAs that operate ombudsman programs.

The guidance recommends outdoor visits continue when possible and that nursing homes allow indoor visitation at all times. The new guidance also outlines ways to allow for indoor visits during a COVID-19 outbreak, emphasizes the rights of State Long-Term Care Ombudsman to meet with residents, and more. A new blog post from the Administration for Community Living details the updated guidance and how it will impact the critical work of Ombudsmen, protection and advocacy systems and others working to support the rights of older adults and people with disabilities.
